REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN IN THE MEDIA

REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN IN THE MEDIA

  • Women are often linked to the domestic situation i.e women as housewives or mothers.

  • They are often seen as sex objects (used to entertain men).

  • Women are less likely to be the source of leading, influential stories (politics, business  etc....) This is because women tend to be few in leading roles relating to this.

  • Certain types of women are represented in the media (young, white, slim). Again relating to them being sexual objects.

  • Recently women's representation in the media has changed drastically, but not all women.

  • Women tend to be used as housewives, always serving others (their husbands, or dominant men).

  • Women are made to look alluring and appealing to attract a section of the audience.

  • In films, women are turned into sex objects through the way they are shot in films. At times they only show the woman's body and not their faces. Again just drawing attention to the object that matters the most to men.

  • Recently femininity has been associated with a stronger more independent and confident woman.

  • Stereotypes of women:- The Dumb Blonde, The Housewife, The MILF, The Cougar, The Bitch, The Whore/Tart.

  • The way the media represents women as sexual products makes women around the world feel like if they don't look like that or act like that they are not beautiful/ if they don't have the exact body features that are represented in the media then they will never be successful.  They forget that the doors to being successful is intelligence, humour and personality.
